Did we build education start-ups for our-self?

Coming to education start-up with question “Can education/learning reach all Indian students ?” with a strong belief that technology would solve the issue, my experience has made me change my question. “Did we build education start-ups for our-self?”

  • I considered education challenge as a quality problem and also as scaling issue and education is basic need for individual. I learnt that the average person perceives it as cost problem and consider education to be niche. People want to have education to get a job with better salary.
  • Success in education business takes a longer time duration than traditional technology start-up. Get in to education because you want to fix problems in education for the next 20 years. A brick and mortar model in free time could create more impact.
  • I considered that online platforms offer access to high quality education and one can also scale access. Students have less time after attending school to devote for the online free content. They are not that much self motivated to consume and learn online. Lot of them prefer to engage a human interface in the process of learning. It is easy to ask question in middle of the class. Student need a lot of time and efforts to write doubts, send to teachers, get answers and understand them.(and also teachers).
  • I assumes that all my customers are hungry for education and would pay. Be aware of the success of early adoption in education. The early adopters in education are fundamentally different from the mass market. Students love to use free products and would think twice to pay for the same as they have limited source of money.
  • Like generic technology, I assume that that educational content can be build generic and the same can be scaled and we can reduce the cost. The student does not feel good as scaling in education makes education not to suit his unique needs. While a bright student gets disinterested with a simple learning concept class or slow class and enjoy advanced topics and rapid class, the opposite is the need for average student or dull student. Class developed for bright students makes the average students drop from the class.
  • There can be two way communication between teacher and student using technology. It is cumbersome to set communication channel and also get feedback o delivered online lesson. When student is not engaged, the student steps out of the online video. There is no way to identify when they got disengaged and fix their disengagement with immediate effect or did he leave for a different reason. This provides no way to engage with students and reduce the drop-out percentage.
